“I have a dream of becoming a psychological counselor or therapist. I know I must keep learning and striving with my own effort and the support of teachers, friends, and the community.”
During a meeting at the beginning of 2023, we met Lan Anh and discovered that beautiful dream. At the time, she was still a 12th-grade student, growing up in the loving care of her father, the sole provider of the family, while carrying the quiet absence of a mother who had passed away when she was very young. Her father worked tirelessly, taking on any job he could find just to support his three children. Among them, only Lan Anh was still able to continue her education. One sibling could not attend school due to a neurological illness, while another had to leave school in fourth grade because the family could no longer afford it. Yet amid such hardship, Lan Anh’s determination never faded. Instead, she nurtured a remarkable aspiration: to use her abilities to contribute to the community, to become someone who could support and uplift others with her own strength.
We often say that Lan Anh is like a little sun, warming her own life while hoping to bring warmth to many others.
When we met her again in 2025, Lan Anh had already become a third-year student majoring in Social Work at Vinh Long University of Technology and Education. In just about another year, she will likely graduate and begin her journey as a professional social worker. When she shared her most recent academic results with Be Better, her excitement was unmistakable. Her efforts had paid off with a significant improvement—a GPA of 3.63/4.0, higher than the previous semester. She also enthusiastically told us about her first internship: there were moments of uncertainty and nervousness, but she was deeply happy to realize she could genuinely support her clients and gain valuable knowledge for the path she had chosen.
If Lan Anh had not been able to continue pursuing her dream back then, where might she be today? Would her life have followed the same difficult path as previous generations, repeating a cycle of hardship and limited opportunity? Giving a child the chance to continue their education does more than transform one life. It opens a way out of poverty and lights a new path for the future of an entire family.
We do not claim that Lan Anh’s journey has already reached extraordinary achievements. However, one thing is for sure: education is the most powerful path to break the cycle of poverty, giving every young person the chance to write their own life story.
