TRUONG QUANG NHUT: WHEN A DREAM OF MACHINES BECOMES A FAMILY’S LIFELINE

05/03/2026

“There were moments I wanted to stop. But if I gave up — who would take care of my mother? Who would carry the burden in my father’s place?”

That question haunts Truong Quang Nhat — a first-year student in Mechanical Engineering at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry. At eighteen, an age that should be filled with nothing heavier than textbooks and youthful ambition, Nhat carries something far greater: the quiet, crushing weight of keeping his family alive. Some nights, he doesn’t come home until 2 a.m. — still in his work clothes, backpack already packed for the morning. Because for Nhat, every hour worked is one more dose of medicine for his mother, one less burden on his father’s aching shoulders.

The small house Nhat grew up in has never known a season of peace.

His mother is losing her battle with nasopharyngeal cancer — a relentless disease that has sapped her strength and stolen her ability to work. His grandmother, frail and largely paralyzed since suffering a stroke, depends on others for every small act of daily life. And before them, his grandfather slipped away to lung cancer — lost not only to illness, but to a family with no money left to fight for him.

Every weight has fallen on his father’s back. Once the household’s sole breadwinner, working grueling days of manual labor, his father’s body has now surrendered to chronic back pain. Income arrives in trickles — some months, not at all — turning the simple acts of a family meal and a monthly prescription into equations with no solution.

There was a time Nhat broke.

Watching the people he loved suffer while feeling powerless to stop it, he withdrew into depression — locking himself in his room, weeping alone in the dark. But it was from that same darkness that something in him hardened into steel. He came to understand, with absolute clarity: If I fall, my family loses its last anchor.

He thought about quitting. He thought about trading his student ID for a full-time paycheck. “But I chose to keep going,” he says. “Because education is the only path that will ever let me truly help my father — and one day, pay for my mother’s treatment.”

And Nhat doesn’t just persist — he excels. With consistent scores above 8.0 across Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, he transformed his passion for mechanics and engineering into a ticket through the gates of university. Mechanical Engineering is a demanding field — one that asks everything of a student’s time, focus, and resilience. Nhat has the passion. He has the mind. What he lacks is a steady hand reaching out to keep him in the classroom, so that tuition fees and hospital bills don’t one day force him to choose between his future and his family.

At Be Better Foundation, we believe that supporting Nhat is not simply about funding one student’s education. It is about keeping the flame alive in an entire family — about helping a devoted son fulfill the promise he has quietly made: to become the pillar his parents can lean on.

With deep respect and gratitude, Be Better Foundation hopes to find a long-term sponsor who will walk this road alongside Quang Nhat — nurturing not only his academic journey, but the values of perseverance, love, and quiet courage that he carries within him every single day.

Because poverty should never be the force that breaks the gears of a determined young mind’s future.
