Ngoc Y and her twin sister have lived with their grandmother since they were three months old, following their parents’ divorce. Their grandmother has taken on the role of both parents, raising them despite her advanced age and worsening heart condition. Their mother works far away, sending only 1 million VND monthly to support the family, leaving the three of them struggling to make ends meet.

Ngoc Y’s parents divorced when she was very young, and her father has not provided any support or care since then. Her mother has remarried and now has an 8-year-old daughter, Ngoc Y’s younger half-sister. Besides her half-sister, Ngoc Y has a twin sister, Ngoc Nhu; both have been raised by their grandmother since they were only three months old. Their grandmother has taken on both parental roles, raising and caring for them over the years, though now her age and health, especially her long-standing heart condition, are becoming serious challenges.
Tragedy struck a few years back when Ngoc Nhu’s stepfather was injured in a construction accident, leaving him unable to work. Since then, the financial burden has fallen entirely on their mother, who has had to find work far away in Ho Chi Minh City to support the family. Despite her efforts, she can only send 1 million VND monthly to help her mother and daughters with their daily needs. Although this has eased some worries, Ngoc Y and her family continue to live in a state of scarcity.
Yet, Ngoc Y’s dream of becoming an English or elementary school teacher has never been restrained by these hardships. With the support from the “Change The Future” scholarship, she is now striving day by day to be admitted into either the English Pedagogy or Elementary Education program at Can Tho University. When asked why she wishes to study there, Ngoc Y answered simply that studying in Can Tho would allow her to be close to her grandmother, so she could help care for her.
Her determination has paid off, as Ngoc Y is now a first-year student in Elementary Education at Can Tho University. She is well on her way to becoming an elementary school teacher, fulfilling both her dream and her desire to stay near her grandmother, just as she had hoped.
