Kim Ngan’s life was marked by hardship from an early age. Her parents divorced when she was just two years old. After that, her mother moved away for work, started a new family, and left Ngan in the care of her father. Her mother later passed away from a stroke.
Despite poor health and partial paralysis in one arm and one leg, Ngan’s father still tries his best to remain mobile. He is unable to work and suffers from multiple illnesses, including diabetes, bronchitis, and a history of tuberculosis. Each month, he must rely on hospital-issued medication to survive. The family owns no farm and lives on her paternal grandmother’s property. Their livelihood depends mainly on a few coconut trees and a meager income that is far from enough to cover basic needs. Their house is run-down, and they frequently lack rice and food.
Even in such extreme poverty and misfortune, Ngan has never stopped dreaming of a better life. She holds a deep desire to study pedagogy at university and become a teacher, hoping to help other disadvantaged children. Ngan understands that education is the only path to changing her future, taking care of her father, and one day living a life filled with happiness.
