Nguyen Le Truc Quynh grew up in a family weighed down by hardship and adversity. Without a house of their own, the entire family has long lived in her maternal grandmother’s house. The grandma is now over 85 years old, suffering from multiple illnesses and frequent hospital visits. Truc Quynh’s father, now over 60, suffers from joint and dental problems. Despite his poor health, he continues to work seasonal farm jobs with an unstable income.
The greatest burden to the family is her mother’s breast cancer, which requires long-term treatment to prolong her life. In order to afford the cost of care, the family had to sell and mortgage their most valuable asset – the farmland. Truc Quynh has two older sisters: her second sister, although academically gifted, was unable to attend university due to financial constraints and now works at a factory; her eldest sister, is also in poor health condition, works as a worker to raise her two children (one in first grade, the other just six months old). Truc Quynh’s parents often have to send money to support her eldest sister, deepening the family’s burden.
Amid these challenges, Truc Quynh remains sincere and resilient. She deeply understands her family’s situation. Though she once dreamed of becoming a singer, she came to realize that, for her, success simply means personal growth, having a stable income, saving enough to care for her parents, and being able to help others even if just with a bottle of water or a good meal.
While reality has forced her to temporarily set aside her childhood dream for the sake of her parents, Truc Quynh believes this is her own path to eventually reaching that dream. She shares, “Once I’m older and more stable, I will pursue my dream. I believe I can do it because it’s never too late to start.”
Be Better Foundation believes that as long as she keeps that dream in her heart and continues to study, her dream will one day take flight.
Truc Quynh is now a first-year student majoring in English Language at Vinh Long University of Technology Education, taking her first step on the journey of building her future.
