Tan Dat is a resilient and ambitious young man. His father passed away when he was just one year old, and his mother later remarried. His family now consists of five members: his stepfather, mother, older sister, younger sister, and himself.
In the past, his mother was the main provider for the family, earning enough from selling vegetables at the market to support her children’s education. His stepfather, a construction worker, struggled with unstable income due to health issues, barely managing to cover the schooling expenses for Dat’s younger sister. However, when his mother was diagnosed with diabetes and muscle atrophy, she could no longer work as she used to. Facing financial hardship, she had to borrow money, but poor sales made it impossible to sustain the family. It was then that Dat made the difficult decision to drop out of school in order to ease the burden.
At just 14 years old, he left his education behind and moved to Saigon to live with his older sister. He found work in a factory, but the wages were low, and at times, employers even refused to pay him. One day, a kind coworker advised him, “Education is the only way out of poverty.” That simple yet powerful message awakened something in Dat, leading him to return to school. The money he had saved from two years of working in Saigon helped cover part of his school expenses. While studying, he took on a part-time job cleaning public restrooms at the market. Thanks to the kindness of his teachers and those around him, he also received daily meals, which gave him the strength to keep going.
Having faced many struggles and hardships, Dat deeply understands the value of education and the kindness of others. These experiences have fueled his determination to work relentlessly toward his goal of becoming a software engineer.
Through unwavering perseverance over the years, in 2024, Tan Dat achieved his dream by earning a place in the Computer Science program at Can Tho University. This marks the beginning of a new chapter and a brighter future for Ha Tan Dat.
