Family situation

Huynh Cong Hieu grew up in a farming family living their lives around fields with an unstable, meager income. Every meal is earned through the blood, sweat, and tears of his parents.

In the past, when Hieu’s father was still in good health, he raised ducks and took on various odd jobs. Hieu’s mother was resourceful and hardworking, capable of doing everything from heavy labor to delicate tasks. Together, they managed to raise their three children.

However, years of hard labor took a heavy toll on his parents’ health. Hieu’s father had an accident at work when a rice-threshing machine collapsed on him, leaving him unable to do physically demanding jobs. Now in his 60s, he also suffers from multiple health issues, such as joint pain and heart disease. According to the doctor’s advice, he should not lift more than 5 kilograms. Hieu’s mother also endures various illnesses, including high blood pressure, sinusitis, and chronic joint pain. Despite being unable to work in manual labor, she still tries to take on odd jobs whenever possible, just to earn a little extra.

In the past, Hieu’s older sister was an excellent student who passed the university entrance exam with high scores. However, she had to set aside her dream of higher education because the family could not afford the tuition and living expenses. That story left a deep imprint on Hieu’s childhood memories. He grew up with a quiet sorrow, giving him a stronger determination to strive harder and change the future.

Currently, Hieu is living with his parents and paternal grandmother, who is over 80 years old. His two older sisters are married and live far from home. The entire family relies on approximately VND 3 million per month (around USD 113), sent by aunts and uncles. This amount is far too small to cover daily living expenses, medical needs, and education costs.

In the face of difficulties, Hieu still pursues his studies with admirable strength and perseverance. In his “Motivation Letter,” he expressed deep affection for his parents: “To me, no one is stronger than my father, and no one is more capable than my mother. I want them to be able to rest and enjoy their old age in full health and peace, without having to toil anymore.” That love has encouraged him to spend countless late nights on study sessions and skip breakfasts to save just a few thousand dong.

With resilience and filial devotion, Hieu has nurtured a dream of studying agriculture and animal husbandry. He was admitted to Can Tho University with high scores. He hopes that one day he can support others in the same situations to rise above poverty through knowledge and perseverance.

Be Better Foundation believes that when a loving heart refuses to surrender to adversity and is given the chance to move forward, it can not only transform its own life but also become a quiet light guiding the way for an entire family and future generations.
