Lan Vy grew up in a uniquely difficult situation. Her parents separated so long ago that she no longer remembers exactly when. Her family now consists of three members: her mother, her younger brother, and herself.
Vy’s mother, in poor health, sell lottery tickets to earn a modest income of only about VND 120,000 – VND 160,000 per day (approximately USD 4.5-6). Vy’s 12-year-old brother has a mild intellectual disability and is currently in sixth grade. The entire burden of supporting the family rests on their mother’s frail shoulders.
Though her circumstances are far more challenging than most of her peers’, Lan Vy has never resented or been ashamed of her background. She understands that no one gets to choose where they were born and firmly believes in the saying, “Hundreds of millions of raindrops fall, none landing by chance. Those we’ve encountered, not a single one is happenstance”. She shares that her childhood dream was simply “to have enough food and clothing,” and as she grew older, it became “to go to school.”
Since the seventh grade, she has dreamt of becoming a television editor. Aware of the tough road ahead due to her family situation, she felt as if the “Change the Future” scholarship from the Be Better Foundation was permission to chase that dream. Lan Vy is a remarkably determined young girl who has overcome both material and emotional struggles to move forward. She has learned to rise above negative emotions, fueled by the love of her mother and brother, as well as the kindness of generous individuals in society. She has gained profound life lessons through human compassion. Be Better Foundation believes that the light given to her will continue to shine, be nurtured and shared to the world through her talents.
