My Duyen’s life was marked by tragedy early on when her father passed away in 2016 from spinal cancer. She was only nine years old at the time. The loss left a pain that could never be healed and placed the burden of raising two children on her mother’s fragile shoulders.
Duyen’s mother became the sole breadwinner. Every day, she wakes up at 3:30 a.m. to collect cakes to sell at the market. In the afternoon, she makes pandan cakes and sticky rice to earn a little more. Her income is unstable, barely VND 100,000 per day (about USD 3.8), and cannot cover the family’s basic needs. She takes on any job available, never turning down a job, no matter how difficult it is to ensure that Duyen and her elder brother can pursue education.
Despite their hardship, Duyen’s mother has never wanted her children to stop at high school and go to manual labor. Both Duyen and her brother love their mother deeply and strive to excel in school, believing that education is their only path out of poverty.
Duyen is a devoted daughter and a caring sister. Understanding her mother’s hardships, besides studying diligently, Duyen also helps her with chores whenever possible. She is also a resilient young girl, courageous in the face of judgment from others, never letting it deter her from her path.
Today, Duyen has been admitted to Dong Thap University, majoring in Information Technology Teacher Education – another step toward her dream of becoming a teacher. Be Better Foundation believes that with her determination, filial piety, and kind heart, she will become not just a teacher of knowledge, but one who plants seeds of kindness in the lives of others.
