The three siblings of Thanh Hang grew up relying on their parents’ farming work. As the eldest, Thanh Hang understands best the hardships her parents endure. Her father, now 53, suffers from back pain and blood-related ailments which is a result of years spent making a living through rice farming. Her mother, 47, has an unstable income, working in the fields alongside her husband or handling household chores when there’s no other work. While her father grows rice, her mother cultivates okra to supplement the family’s income. Despite their relentless labor, their combined monthly earnings barely reach 2-3 million VND, which can fall drastically during poor harvests. This income has to cover the family’s living expenses as well as the education costs for Thanh Hang and her two younger siblings, one in elementary school and the youngest just starting kindergarten. Every day, Thanh Hang receives 10,000 VND for school—a small amount for most but, for her, it is enough for food for an entire day.
Understanding the financial strain her family faced, Thanh Hang saved a modest amount by the time she was in 11th grade, which she used to start a small stationery business. After a few months, her profits totaled around 30 million VND, all of which she put toward paying off her family’s debts. Her entrepreneurial spirit took root from this experience, inspiring her to pursue her passion for business further. She’s been working tirelessly to gain entry into the Business Administration program at the University of Finance and Marketing in Ho Chi Minh City.
In 2024, Thanh Hang achieved her dream by becoming a student in Business Administration, opening the door to a brighter future not only for herself but also for her family. Her determination and resilience are a testament to her strength, and with the support of the Be Better Foundation, she now has the chance to fulfill her aspirations.
