Nguyen Ngoc Tuyet Nhu grew up in a family facing many challenges. Since she was in sixth grade, her parents have been separated. Her father’s alcoholism created emotional distance, which was the main cause of conflicts in her family. Now he is 46 years old, works as a farmer, but has virtually no steady income due to unstable health related to his lung issues. Therefore, he was unable to provide any financial support for his children.
Her mother, also 46 years old, had to move to Saigon alone to make a living as a ride-hailing motorbike driver. Earning a monthly income ranging from VND 6 to 9 million (about USD 227-341), she tries to set aside VND 1 to 2 million (about USD 37-75) to support Nhu, her younger brother, and their maternal grandparents. Life in the city is harsh, and her mother’s health has gradually declined with age. Nhu and her 13-year-old brother now live under the care of their grandparents, both over 70 years old. At advanced ages, they are suffering from various diseases (her grandfather suffers from diabetes, while her grandmother struggles with joint problems, lung issues, and a history of neurological illness) and survive on the meager income from leasing out their small rice field after each harvest season.
Under such circumstances, Tuyet Nhu was well aware of her responsibilities. She is a thoughtful and highly motivated young girl with excellent academic performance. Notably, Nhu has discovered a clear passion for the field of Information Technology – an invaluable asset that provides her with a solid direction for the future. In Grade 12, she earned Third Prize at the Provincial level in Informatics and was admitted to the Software Engineering program at Can Tho University.
