Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung is a young girl of remarkable resilience, born and raised in a rural area with many difficulties. Her father is a farmer whose work is unstable. He takes on any job available, such as coconut peeling, tending orange fields, or repairing machines, earning about VND 200,000 per day (around USD 7.5), but work is not always available. Her mother also works as a farmer and a seamstress at a stuffed toy factory, earning VND 4 – 5 million per month (about USD 150-189). However, she often has to work overtime, and the prolonged sitting has led to chronic back pain, muscle strain, and varicose veins.
In addition to her parents, Nhung lives with her paternal grandparents. Her grandfather, at 71, still works in the fields, while her 56-year-old grandmother not only farms but also raises chickens and fish to support the family. Nhung also has a younger sister. Although the whole family works hard to make ends meet, the thought of paying for Nhung’s university tuition brings great anxiety, as it is far beyond their financial means. Yet, despite the pressure, her parents and grandparents do everything they can to ensure the children stay in school and continue chasing their dreams.
In these circumstances, Hong Nhung has not only excelled academically but has also demonstrated the strength and determination of a true fighter. With unwavering commitment, she gives her all to every goal she sets, embodying the resilient bamboo and noble lotus her father once spoke of. Nhung understands that every success is the result of perseverance and self-discipline. She believes that by refining herself and overcoming mental obstacles, her heart and knowledge can shine and help many others.
Be Better Foundation believes that with her potential and character, if supported and nurtured with compassion, Nhung will not only succeed but will also use her talent to contribute meaningfully to her community.
