Report on the charity trip in Vung Liem, Vinh Long from 27 April to 28 April 2023

On April 27 and 28, 2023,  the Be Better Foundation organized a Mentorship program at Vo Van Kiet High School and Nguyen Hieu Tu High School in Vung Liem District, Vinh Long. The program’s aim was to prepare 12th-grade students for life.

We discovered many students with unfortunate circumstances. Some are orphans; some have been abandoned by their parents, and some have parents suffering from  serious illnesses. They live an uncertain life filled with worries about the future after finishing high school. Our team conducted a psychological test and interviewed 18 children in especially difficult circumstances and granted full scholarships to 9 of them so that they can finish university.

• “To be successful in the future, what do you need to do?”
  “Before learning to be a man of success, you need to learn to be a man of value. How do you understand this sentence?”  

These were some questions asked in our Mentorship program. Some people supposed the questions are difficult for students as they are not mature enough.

However, those people were all wrong!

Even though the children are only 17 to 18 years old and live in the countryside with many difficulties, they are insightful with a strong will and a clear direction in life. Even though they have never attended any bilingual schools nor extra classes, they were able to get 7.0 on the IELTS test while in grade 11. They are just in grade 12 and do not have a computer at home, but they can develop a website, edit videos, and design graphics.After each journey, we learn some more stories about many silent lives in impoverished rural areas, but somewhere there are always glimpses of hope, and talented individuals for the future.
