Meals for children

“Living in the city all these years, I cannot not imagine that poverty is still harshly present in such remote places. There are places where children do not have enough food to eat, their parents can only dig into the ground and in their garden for something edible to feed their children to school.”

On the way home after the first day of giving shoes to children, I asked Mark, a British volunteer: “How did you feel about the trip?”. “Great but sad”, he replied.

I nodded and smiled at Mark, wholly sympathizing with his feelings. I didn’t know how much formality the word “great” has in it, but I could thoroughly understand the word “sad”.

Then, I searched for an article about the government’s decision to cut subsidies for poor students in Gia Lai, Kon Tum, translated it by Google, and showed it to Mark. Mark told me he had already known about this story when talking with some teachers last night. A teacher also said that students had to bring rice to school on their own and in their bowls of rice, the food was “earthworms”. I tried to explain that it wasn’t an “earthworm”, but it was “melonihidae” which was edible. After listening to my explanation, Mark nodded but he was sunk in thought.

I was also lost in thoughts running through my mind.

I remembered my tears rolling down when I read an article with pictures of the children’s meal including a little bit of white rice and “melonihidae”.

Living in the city all these years, I cannot not imagine that poverty is still harshly present in such remote places. As the modern economy makes agriculture more productive, people in the city still throw away tons of food every day. Conversely, there are places where children do not have enough food to eat, their parents can only dig into the ground and in their garden for something edible to feed their children to school.

I had an opportunity to meet and talk with a school’s vice principal there, and I felt his heartache when he, like a father, saw his children needy and poor. I told him that I would help him contact a charity organization called “Com co thit” (Rice with Meat) which gives meals to students. Then, I could see tears falling down his face although he turned away and secretly wiped them away.

On the day we received the letter of calling for rice and food donation from the school’s principal, our foundation could not ignore it. Even though we have been very busy with many projects to support ethnic minority students in Gia Lai and Kon Tum such as “School shoes for poor children” and “Please give children a dream”, we have decided to implement one more project called “Meals for children” hoping that children there can have enough rice and food for their meals.

Be Better Foundation would like to call for donations from friends, colleagues and philanthropists; your support to the campaign “Meals for children” is to buy rice and food for poor children in Kon Long District, Kon Tum Province.
