Bich Thuy’s childhood is an extremely unfortunate story as she is an orphan, having lost both her father and mother. She still has an older brother, but due to their extremely difficult family circumstances, he had to give up his studies and work tirelessly as a construction worker in Dong Nai to support himself and his younger sister. With no one else to rely on, Thuy is currently living with her maternal aunt and grandmother, who is frail and unable to move around. Thuy’s uncle works as a driver. When there are no trips to make, he takes on any available odd jobs with meager and inconsistent income. Thuy’s aunt takes the responsibility for the household chores and occasionally gets hired for gardening work, especially during the harvest season. The total income of their family is currently insufficient to cover their daily living expenses, let alone support Thuy’s studies. Bich Thuy has been able to attend school up to this point thanks to the financial assistance provided by her maternal uncle and relatives. Presently, their situation is challenging. Without any future additional help, Bich Thuy may not be able to pursue higher education.

She voluntarily withdrew from her scholarship to give the opportunity to another student who was in greater need.
An Binh’s family situation is complex. Her parents divorced when she was six, and then she lived with her mother and grandmother. However, her mother remarried 4 yeas ago and left her town to live with her new family. Since then, her grandmother, who is a scrap collector with a very low amount of money earned per day, has had to struggle to cover their living expenses.
